How does self-storage work?

- Transport them to the site yourself or arrange for a removals firm or white van service (we can recommend options if you need advice).
- Fill your self-storage unit.
- Lock your unit (you keep the key).
- Access your items whenever you wish, seven days a week.
How secure are my items?
Yes, our highly trained staff are experienced and would be delighted to show you a range of storage units to help you find the one that best meets your needs.
How long can I stay?
You can stay as short or as long as you like—from a minimum of seven days to as long as you wish, provided you continue making payments, of course!
Is there anything I can't store?
Common sense applies, but generally, you can store most things except for:
- Food or perishable goods
- Compressed gases
- Toxic, pollutant, or contaminated goods
- Firearms, munitions, or explosives
- Radioactive materials
- Chemicals or biological agents
- Flammable or hazardous goods
- Any item emitting fumes, odour, or smell
- All living plants or animals
- Cash and securities
- Fireworks
- Illegal or stolen goods
- Waste, asbestos, or potentially dangerous materials
- Motorbikes (not allowed in our units)
We always cooperate with the Police and HM Customs.
What about insurance?
Your goods must be insured while in storage. We offer a StoreProtect Policy.
We take great care of our premises and make every effort to protect your stored items. However, certain events, like fire or flood, are beyond our control, so it’s standard practice for self-storage companies to require customers to insure their goods adequately during their stay.
What does our insurance cover?
Our insurance covers actual physical loss or damage to your property caused by: Fire, lightning, explosion, earthquake, storm, flood, burst or leaking pipes, water or liquid ingress, aircraft or articles dropped therefrom, theft accompanied by forcible and violent entry to or exit from the building or unit, riot, strike, civil commotion, malicious damage, and impact by vehicles or railway rolling stock.
If you choose to provide your own insurance, you’ll need to supply a letter or policy from the insurer specifying:
- The sum insured
- The cover start and end dates
- Our address where your goods are stored
You must ensure your policy covers the same “Insured Perils” as detailed in Fort Knox’s Terms and Conditions. We will need to take a copy of your insurance policy and keep it on file with your lease agreement. These documents must be supplied annually as they expire.
